Camera club Exhibition awards

I managed three merit awards from my submissions, which I was quite pleased with since this is the first time that I have entered. They were 'Rhythmns of Summer', 'The Fence Panel' and 'Winter Pigeons'. For these last two see below. 'The Fence Panel ' was the only one of the five of my entries into the standard section that did ok, which was a little surprising since I had a reasonable season where they did well. 'Rhythmns of Summer' and 'Winter Pigeons' did well in the Advanced sections, which I am really pleased with.

This also did quite well in the normal competition in the middle of the year. I think it scored a 10/10, if I remember correctly. I pushed the green colour a little bit, perhaps too far, but got away with it when the judge saw it as a 'valid artistic interpretation'. I thought it was ok at the time on my monitor but forgot that the projector at the club is a little harsh, so the green was pretty strong when it came up.

1/1600 sec @ f5.6, ISO 1600, 85mm (zoom), Canon 20D

This was a winter shot, the pigeons were a long way off and photographed against a slate grey sky. The image was also a severe crop from a larger photo, which is why there is not much detail. I pushed the sky to bright white in PS3, and toned a B&W conversion. I also pushed the tree into the background a little by selecting the tree and reducing the contrast somewhat. Judge commented that it had a 'pen and ink look'.
