Assignment #5-1: Official graffiti (a replacement image)Graffiti from a couple of Brazilian street-artists, commissioned by the Tate Modern. I was interested in the presence of officially sanctioned graffiti alongside the more usual unofficial stuff, for which see next picture. I replaced the previous selection because I felt this image had a clear link to an established South Bank building.
Assignment #5-2: Unofficial graffiti (a replacement image)A couple of kids adding to a less official area for graffiti. Strictly speaking this area, which also doubles as a skateboarding park, is officially tolerated rather than sanctioned, with periodic whitewashing of the whole area. Which just encourages a new crop to grow up of course. This image replaces the skateboarding one.
Assignment #5-3: Dancing on the South Bank (an updated image)A crop of the previous image. This was a youth group that were practicing their dances and musicianship in an open area just by the R. Thames. Very colourful and full of movement.
Assignment #5-4: Playing for the dancers (a replacement image)The youth group had a satisfying multi-ethnic feel to them, and were as enthusiastic about the music as they were the dancing.
Assignment #5-5: Inside an art installation (original image)Taken at the Hayward Gallery where they had an exhibition of artists views of architecture. Overall, not a very satisfying exhibition, there were some unoriginal or poorly thought out exhibits, I thought. Apart, that is, from this one, which was a large inflatable ball divided into two floors. Patrons were allowed in the upper floor to crawl about without shoes on, so I took this on the ground floor looking up.
Assignment #5-6: The Dude Abides (an updated image)A young man posing for his girlfriend in front of some fountains by Waterloo Station.
Assignment #5-7: A phone and a large comfy chair (an original image)A study in lost concentration in a public place. The ultra large furniture just appeared in front of one of the galleries one day and were very popular. There was a full lounge set there.
Assignment #5-8: The leap (a replacement image)This young man made a number of attempts to complete a somersault off of the stairs at left of picture. He was finally successful. This was shot alongside the R. Thames, where there remains a small strand of sand right down by the river.
Assignment #5-9: The Ice Bear (an updated image)This was an ice carving of a bear that appeared as part of the winter fair on the South Bank. Again I was looking for that sense of play that happens all along the South Bank on a regular basis.
Assignment #5-10: The promised land (a new image)A juxtaposition of fairground frivolity and fun with the rather grimmer realities on display under

Assignment #5-11: Tracking the Shibboleth (an original image)
Trying to hang on to this one! The young lady was, very intently, walking along the scar left by the art installation ‘Shibboleth’, which was the large crack made in the floor of the Tate Modern. Again it is ordinary people creating play after the officially sanctioned art has disappeared. I did not want to crop it further since the crack is important.
Assignment #5-12: Even the lame shall walk . . (an original image)
To this day I have no idea where the owner of the wheelchair had gone to. Alongside
