With camera set to Daylight WB the image was definitely on the blue side, LR gave it a Temp = 4950 and Tint = +4.
With LR WB = Flash it got Temp = 5500 and Tint = +4.
With LR WB set to custom by clicking on a white surface with the colour dropper I got Temp = 5500 and Tint = 0.
LR WB = Auto was quite poor, Temp = 4300 and Tint = +4; way too cool. May be due to other elements in the image, items sitting on a brown worktop for example.
Surprising to see the differences arising from quite small changes in the settings.
Other points to note:
- small still life set up consisting of a white tube, a silver metal clock and a dark brown box lid with a sun face molded on it.
- Keep white tube away from flash! Needs to be the furthest away from the light source to retain some balance
- Diffuser was a good thing
- Image worked best when flash was in front of the plane of the objects and off to one side so that it brought out the molding of the box lid.
- Flash pretty much overwhelmed the daylight from the large picture window behind the camera, so front on to the objects. Kind of surprised by that
- Found that I could position the flash to get shadows on the sun face but leave the brighter objects in muted shadows, probably the best set up.
- Also muting the flash even further with on camera flash compensation of -1 ev was even better. EV -2 was too soft.
- Flash did not fire on a couple of occasions, probably due to me holding it slightly off beam of the wireless transmitter.
1/8 sec @ f5.6, ISO 100, 80mm, Canon 5D, flash compensation = -1.
